Adventures in Amsterdam: Amsterdam Centraal Station, The Dam Square & Canal Boat Ride

It would be a crime to visit the Netherlands and not pass by the capital, Amsterdam. I was honored to experience this city. My visit was brief, but filled with rich experiences. From the surreal moment of seeing the full view of the city once we reached the Amsterdam Centraal station, to appreciating the elaborate architecture of the Dam Square, and the scenic boat tour through the city. An experience that I had once dreamt of was finally happening. Plus, the weather was amazing!

Here's today's verse;

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14

Yes, we are still travelling, and this time, we are in Amsterdam! On our day trip, we enjoyed the view of the city after leaving the Amsterdam Centraal station, visiting the Dam Square, and taking a canal boat tour through the city.

Amsterdam Central Station - Centraal Station

The Amsterdam Centraal Station is the most central part of Amsterdam, with over 250,000 people passing through daily!

If you're coming from another city in the Netherlands to Amsterdam via train, your train will stop here. After ascending the escalator, you will get a full view of the city all at once. It's such a surreal moment. ❤

Also, an elaborate building on the right of the Centraal Station is the St. Nicholas Church. It serves as the main Catholic Church of Amsterdam. I was intrigued by how it effortlessly stood tall in its majesty with its intricate details and elaborate architecture. Its construction was completed in 1887, and it's stood tall ever since.

The Dam Square

Straight ahead from the Amsterdam Centraal station is the Dam Square. The Dam Square is one of the central points in Amsterdam. It has the National Monument (the white statue), and iconic surrounding buildings like the Royal Palace, where the King of the Netherlands resides, and Madame Tussauds, where you can find wax figures of celebrities and other public figures.

Amsterdam Canal Boat Tour

Amsterdam has over 160 canals, which measure up to 100km. The name of the water body that runs through the city is the Amstel River. Considering the vast number of canals, there are plenty of canal boat tours taking place through the city, and we took one. 😊

This was one of my favorite parts of the trip. We got to see plenty of houseboats, floating restaurants, MANY terraces & unique houses along the streets.

Some of the most interesting sites I saw were;

  • Hotel De L'Europe - A luxurious hotel by the Amstel River with over 100 guest rooms, 55 specialized suites, and a five-bedroom penthouse suite. It also has a two-michelin star fine dining restaurant known as Flore, Trattoria Graziella (Italian), Brassierie Marie (French), Freddy's Bar (pub) & Chapter 1896 (cocktail bar).

  • Sea Palace Restaurant - This is Europe's largest floating restaurant, that specializes in serving Chinese cuisine.

  • Dancing Houses - The houses along this street have since sunk from their original foundation, thus have a wobbly shape. This gave them the 'dancing houses' nickname.

  • Singel 7 House - In the 17th century, citizens were being taxed based on how wide their houses were. In a bid to avoid this tax, creatively, this house, known as the narrowest house façade in Amsterdam, measures 1.05m in width!

I filmed most of the tour, and have embedded the clips, including captions of the sites I saw. Watch below ❤ AND please like, and subscribe 😉.

My short trip to Amsterdam was a dream come true. I'll never forget the surreal moment of getting a full view of the city, from the Amsterdam Centraal station, to standing on the cobblestones at the Dam Square, and the scenic boat ride along the Amstel River.
