As continuation of the previous post, Adventures In Texel Island, North Holland Part One: Landal Holiday Park, Ferry Ride & The Most Stunning Sunset, this post is part two of my experience at Texel Island. In this post, I share my experience of the Northern Sea Beach, Shrimp Fishing in the Wadden Sea, and seeing the Eierland Lighthouse on our last day. For more, keep reading.
Before I begin this post, I will share an accompanying Bible verse for this and subsequent posts. The Word of God encourages, uplifts, and guides. It also convicts and challenges. On my About page, I have shared that I am a born-again Christian, and I would not be where I am today if it weren't for my Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ. God's Word has been my anchor all through, and my prayer is that it will be the same for you. Now, onto today's verse;
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1st Thessalonians 5:16-18
The Northern Sea Beach
One of the reasons I appreciated the location of our holiday home at Landal Sluftervallei Holiday Park is that it was a short drive/short bike ride, or even a long-ish walk to the northern sea beach. The beach is my happy place, so I was beaming when we first made our way there for a chill afternoon at the beach.
The sand is light brown-whitish, the sea waters are a light brown, and the weather is a bit warm, albeit very windy. For me, who gets cold easily, I had to carry a light sweater or scarf with me whenever we went to the beach.
Depending on the state of the sea that day, you are allowed to swim, surf, and even fish. You may even set up a little picnic by the beach with foldable chairs, a 'shuka', some snacks and drinks, and relax. Watch out for the seagulls, though! There are plenty of them roaming about, and they might try to steal your food, hehe.
Here are beautiful pictures of the beach, sea, and me, so you can get to sea (see) ;) What I am talking about.
Shrimp Fishing At The Wadden Sea
During our trip, I partook in a very interesting activity, shrimp fishing at the Wadden Sea.
This activity is conducted by TX20 Walrus. You will depart on a large boat from Oudeschild harbor, about a 30-minute drive from De Cocksdorp, then embark on a two-hour boat ride at sea to fish for shrimp, crab, and other types of fish.
As you embark on the boat ride, you'll get to enjoy the view of the beautiful sea (with PLENTY of jellyfish), and you'll also get to see incredible boats and ships in the harbor or during the ride. You may even see seals if you're lucky! After the boat is far into the sea, large nets on both sides are dropped into the sea, then as the boat continues to move, the nets catch shrimp, crabs, and even jellyfish.
The catch is then placed on a platform on the boat, and the guide will take time to educate you on the different types of fish. I loved this activity for this, as it was not only fun, but also a great learning experience.
After this, the shrimp that have been caught will be briefly boiled in hot water, and you can eat them 😋.
Another beautiful site to see, once the shrimp is ready, seagulls will flock to the boat and follow you all the way to the harbor. It was such a beautiful sight to see! Anyway, enough yapping, here are the pictures!
Viewing The Eirland LightHouse
You can't afford to visit and leave Texel without seeing the Eierland LightHouse!
Here's a bit of history about it: According to Wikipedia , many ships kept getting lost at sea until a Texel notary known as Johannes Ludovicus Kikkert advocated for the construction of a lighthouse for the safeguarding of seafarers. Upon successful approval, construction was completed in 1864. However, in 1945, at the end of World War II, the lighthouse was severely damaged during the Georgian Uprising. The lighthouse was re-constructed in 1948. The repairs considerably changed its appearance, making it look much wider.
You can also purchase tickets for a tour, whereby you can climb to the top of the lighthouse, and see the sea for miles and miles and miles. Warning‼: it's 118 steps till the top!😅
In conclusion...
Before I knew it, my time at Texel was over, and my family and I headed back home. I truly appreciated my time there, the memories made, the people I interacted with, the food, and getting to immerse myself in the rich history and culture of Texel.
Till next time!
I still have plenty of blog posts coming up. Next post, I'll tell you all about my adventures in Oslo, Norway! ;).
Till then,
Miss Kambe.
