It’s been 6 months since I relaxed my hair, and I recently did my first retouch. In this post, I’d like to update you on my 6-month progress, tips to follow when retouching your hair, and things I have learned so far regarding maintaining healthy, relaxed hair. This one will be short and sweet, so enjoy! I have also included a list of all the hair products I use to keep my hair healthy, plus links to where you can find them, and their prices. So, read till the end to get that info. ❤
I’m six months into my relaxed hair journey, and I recently retouched my hair for the first time since I first relaxed my hair. And I was genuinely amazed by the results, as you can see from the photo comparison below.

I was a bit worried about the state of my hair, since I had had braids that cut a lot of my hair when I undid them, but turns out it got even healthier!
I used the MegaGrowth Regular Relaxer and had someone do it for me. I don’t yet trust myself to do it on my own hehe. And that’s my first tip when it comes to retouching your hair.
1. Go to a hair salon you can trust and with someone who knows what they’re doing
When retouching or relaxing your hair, go to a salon with people who know how to use a relaxer. Hair Relaxer is a chemical and has a step-by-step process that needs to be followed. Save your hair from disaster and go to a place you can trust.
2. When retouching, only have the new growth relaxed
After having relaxed hair for a while, more hair will grow from your roots. This hair is natural and should be the only section of your hair that needs to be relaxed during retouch. The part of your hair that is already relaxed, like towards your ends, should not be relaxed again. Otherwise, it will be brittle, dry, and break easily. When in the salon, ensure the hairdresser only relaxes new growth.
3. Be diligent with your haircare regimen between retouches
I wash and deep condition my hair bi-weekly, as I elaborated in the post before this, My Healthy Relaxed Hair Journey Part Two. The only product I don’t use anymore is the Virgin Hair Fertilizer. My aim in using it was to restore the volume and length my hair lost when I undid my artificial locs last year. Now that I am content with my hair’s volume, I don’t use it anymore.
In conclusion, these are the products I use for my relaxed hair, for retouches, daily, and during my bi-weekly washes. I have included links for all of them, and the plus is that you can find them easily in local supermarkets and beauty shops, plus the prices are quite fair.
4. Not all ‘protective’ styles are protective
I’m learning that normal braids, box braids, or knotless, may not be the best option for relaxed hair. Since relaxed hair is chemically processed and weaker than natural hair, braids tug at the hair strands and may cause more breakage. At least from my experience, I plaited box braids and unfortunately experienced a lot of breakage. I think it’s time I start exploring wigs. I'm still figuring out the best protective style for the times I'd like to give my hair a break, but I'm sure with time I'll figure it out and of course share it with you!
In conclusion, these are the products I use for my relaxed hair, for retouches, daily, and during my bi-weekly washes. I have included links for all of them, and the plus is that you can find them easily in local supermarkets and beauty shops, at affordable prices.
